–Give brief description of the various package managers under each '*-based distros' category.

–Add Solus and ClearLinux.
* We could probably do with a package managers article, comparing/contrasting them or at least giving update/install/remove command examples. Mrsnooze (talk) 23:28, 25 February 2016 (EST)

On Special:Wanted pages a heap of redlinks show up regarding article links from the distro thumbnail images. When there is an IGW article about the distro, it's already linked in the distro description e.g. Babbies First Linux#Debian, Babbies First Linux#Ubuntu. When it's not, it leads nowhere e.g. Babbies First Linux#Antergos or redirects back to this page e.g. Babbies First Linux#Manjaro.

Sorry to necro this, just saw that the page was a little bit out of date. CentOS is completely dead and USB multiboot has become much more common. Rather than entirely re-writing this article I tried to reconcile the new stuff with the old, but I would suggest not grouping distros by package management tool, as Fedora uses dnf over rpm now.

Latest revision as of 19:59, 26 April 2024

Feel free to add distros in "Independent Distros" section if they don't use the packaging system based on what we have right now. But if 2 (or more) distros have the same packaging system, make their own group before Independent Distros. Morpheus (talk) 12:53, 19 November 2015 (EST)

Removed Liberté Linux

Liberté Linux hasn't been updated in nearly 3 years, and is not fit for use, as a security-focused distro.

To-do list:

–Add Solus and ClearLinux.

Distinguishing systemdfree and systemd distros

On independent distros, I think it's really redundant and unneeded to distinguish independent distros because of its init. I think distinguishing something based on its package manager would be enough. If one were to distinguish the systemd free distros, please add it to the respective distro's description instead.

And also, if you want to alphabetize something, make sure to keep the package manager's flagship distro (for example, dpkg's flagship distro is Debian, rpm's Fedora, pacman's Arch and so on) on top, from number 2, you can alphabetize it.  Morpheus talk 11:31, 16 February 2016 (EST)

Fair enough.

Yes, I noticed this. It's precisely why I left the other sections untouched, save for the independent ones. — Galactus (talk) 12:07, 16 February 2016 (EST)

Lots of Red Links

On Special:WantedPages a heap of redlinks show up regarding article links from the distro thumbnail images.

Stubs could be created for these redlinks, but usually this page already has a stub-like description of the distro. Someone might come along and create a full article for each of the distros, but it hasn't yet and seems unlikely.

I suggest we either:

 • Link to the official homepage of the distro from the thumbnail if no IGW article exists.
 • Link to nothing from the distro thumbnail.
