It makes no sense to have a dedicated cross-platform page, since everything on it will be duplicated on each individual OS page. If users want to check if software is cross platform they can simply compare the Windows, OSX and GNU/Linux recommended software pages to see if it is included on more than one.

Furthermore, some software is only partially cross platform (i.e. works with Windows and GNU/Linux but not OSX or works with OSX and GNU/Linux but not Windows). Having a criteria like "it must work with at least Windows, OSX and GNU+Linux to be included on this page" would leave out iOS, Android and other operating systems too. Go ahead and add this. --Bisasam (talk) 18:09, 27 January 2014 (EST)

Let's do something with this. I happen to agree with most choices here. --Fontain (talk) 18:03, 27 January 2014 (EST)

I created simple layout for Linux, I think we should follow something similar. Arch wiki has got a good example page structure here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/List_of_Applications --Boreq (talk) 18:05, 27 January 2014 (EST)

Sorry, Boreq, I just wanted to put that there. Someone else will have to edit the format for me, as I'm a bit too busy. --Fontain (talk) 18:07, 27 January 2014 (EST)

Sure thing, I just want to bring the last version with the previous layout to yout attention guys. http://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Recommended_software&oldid=155 We could aim at something like this, it is more clear in my opionion. --Boreq (talk) 18:15, 27 January 2014 (EST)

  • WHY are we recommending what we are recommending? Page is pretty worthless without that. That, and everything I've ever seen on /g/ specifically recommends AGAINST Tixati. And VLC Player? Is this a troll page? Toynbeeidea (talk) 07:51, 28 January 2014 (EST)

What about seperating this into Recommended software(Linux) and Recommended software(Windows)? They don't really have that much in common. Krypt0n (talk) 12:57, 28 January 2014 (EST)

We should choose a format and stick with that, right now there are several different listing types. --Nomorepancakes (talk) 15:16, 28 January 2014 (EST)

Renaming the article

This page should be renamed to 'Recommended software (Linux)' since Windows and OSX already have their own articles, and this one barely links those pages. --85x (talk) 11:39, 29 January 2014 (EST)

Soft for Android

Android fags, create this page already.

Recommended cross platform software page is not needed

I went through and made sure everything that was on the Recommended cross platform software page is now included on each of the Windows/GNU+Linux/OSX (where applicable) recommended software pages.
