The Electronic Frontiers Foundation is the leading nonprofit organization defending civil liberties in the digital world. Founded in 1990, EFF champions user privacy, free expression, and innovation through impact litigation, policy analysis, grassroots activism, and technology development. They were founded after the illegal sting operation known as "Operation Sundevil" which proved the ineptness of Law Enforcement of the time to computer related affairs. Operation Sundevil was a raid on "hackers" that were allegedly performing misc. illegal things. These were all proven false. You can read more about Operation Sundevil here.
They grew in fame mostly due to their Free Speech "Blue Ribbon" campaign against the CDA in 1996. After the Blue Ribbon campaign, they gained more notoriety defending cryptology use in the United States at a time it was illegal. It is now a very famous organization.
