Desktop Macs
Besides the iMac, these models do not come with a monitor. A popular choice is the LG UltraFine 5K monitor, priced at $1,299 and available on Apple's website. The iMac and Mac Pro are bundled with a mouse and keyboard, whereas the Mac Mini is not.

GNU Emacs is a powerful, free and highly customizable editor from the GNU project. Old versions of GNU Emacs were bundled in macOS up until version 10.14. This article will demonstrate how to install Emacs. In Catalina (10.15) and newer versions, you may run into some common problems, and this article will demonstrate how to fix them.
Installation
If you do not have a package manager, then you can download a .dmg installer from the GNU Emacs for Mac OS X website.
MacPorts
Open your terminal and run
- port install emacs-app
The difference between the emacs and emacs-app ports is that the latter is designed for Aqua support.
Homebrew
Emacs is installed as a cask on Homebrew via
- brew install --cask emacs
Building from source

Common Issues on macOS 10.15+
Gatekeeper
You need to give Emacs.app full disk access for it to properly function when opening from the Dock. To do this, open [System Preferences] > [Security & Privacy] > [Full Disk-Access] then add the program in there. If you installed Emacs using Homebrew, you will also have to give full disk access to ruby, located in /usr/bin/ruby.
Wrong PATH when launching from Dock
The exec-path-from-shell package automatically fixes this issue. If you are using straight.el as your package manager, then you simply append the following to your init.el file.
- (use-package exec-path-from-shell
- :config (exec-path-from-shell-initialize))
Missing manpages in M-x man
On the latest versions of Xcode, the macOS SDK supplies man2 and man3. However, these manpages are not stored in /usr/share/man, but in /Library/Developer. Since man.el uses the output of man -k to populate its list, you need to refresh your whatis database. To do this, run the following commands on your terminal.
- sudo bash
- export MANPATH=`manpath`
- /usr/libexec/makewhatis
You may get some errors about /usr/share/man being a read-only filesystem, but you can simply ignore them. After this is done, man.el should be able to find sections 2 and 3 of your manpages.
