News Aggregators

  • DistroWatchLinux distro release news and a weekly newsletter. Also covers a little bit of BSD and some other open source Operating Systems like Haiku. Can also learn a lot about a certain distro such as packages it has. Has a decent list of Linux/open source focused podcasts.
  • Slashdot — As old as the internet, has changed hands too many times to count and is run by idiots. However the community that visits/comments on the articles are top notch.
  • SoylentNews — A fork of Slashdot from early 2014 (the infamous "Slashdot Beta" era). Good, but much smaller community.
  • MOSFET.net — a project from NODE with no ads.
  • Hacker News — General technology and tech entrepreneur news. While it is run by Y Combinator, a corporate startup accelerator focusing mainly on tech, it surprisingly isn't very pozzed. Unlike Reddit's r/technology, it actually has mostly sane, moderate, and level-headed users that also are either very tech-savvy and/or have experience in tech and related fields, some even being long serving professionals.
    • Hacker News Algolia Search — Official Algolia-powered search engine for surfing and browsing posts and comments on Ycombinator's Hacker News.

Written Articles

/g/'s Core Sites

  • ArsTechnica — Decent writers on staff. Covers all things tech. Sometimes may be biased when talking about Linux, that's why it's called ArseTechnica sometimes.
  • Phoronix — Free and open-source software news, benchmarks, and more! Focuses mostly on hardware, OEMs, firmware, and drivers for the Linux kernel.
  • The Register — Important stories reported with a loose feel of attempted hipness. The security section is particularly fun. Verity Stob, a pseudonymous columnist, is amusing.
  • TorrentFreak — Focus on torrent and copyright issues. If your tracker is down, these guys will know why.
  • Wired — More consumerist than ArsTechnica and falling towards clickbait headlines and political correctness with declining tech content as of 2021. Good security section.
  • Armed and Dangerous — "Sex, software, politics, and firearms. Life's simple pleasures...". The great ESR's blog
  • N-O-D-E — Technical projects
  • IEEE Spectrum — General insider technology news from a major technology research organization.
  • Aviation Week & Space Technology — As it says on the tin. Well known for its inside stories, to the point it is known as Aviation Leak & Space Mythology
