Pit Stop

Preface

So you want to be a /g/entooman, but you don't know where to start? You want to start programming, creating websites, and understand what everyone on /g/ or /tech/ is talking about? This is the place for you.

This /g/uide is an outline of everything you will need to know in order to have a baseline knowledge of most things technology. Please note that this will only get you so far, this will not make you a GNU/Linux Wizard, it will only give you a starting place. Your family and friends will think you are a wizard straight out of the matrix, however you will still have a far way to go before becoming a true wizard.

This /g/uide will follow the /g/ way. The /g/ way is to be, cheap in money, free in software (and hardware), anonymous (as is realistic), anti-establishment (I won't be shilling Macs and Ruby), and anti-sjw.

Before I begin saying what this guide covers, I will start by saying what it doesn't cover. This guide will not teach you how to be a blackhat hacker and it will not provide you with the knowledge set to be a L33T member of Anonymous. If you want to be a hacker go here.[1]

This guide will cover the following subjects: Linux Distros, Freedom, Hardware, Programming, CLI, Web Development, Tools.

Hardware

To start this guide off we will cover your computing environment. If you already have a computer, great. If your computer does not follow these guidelines when you next upgrade follow them.

Desktop If you are using a desktop as your computing environment you must self build it. It's not hard, it'll save you money, you'll understand how your computer works (somewhat), and it only takes an hour. There are many guides on how to do this, logicalincrements is the best for beginners in my opinion. [2].

Laptop If you decide to use a Laptop as your programming environment then you should buy a used thinkpad. Use one of the thinkpad guides on this site in order to get yourself one. The hardware is top of the line, only really rivaled in build quality by Apple, and the linux support is fantastic.

Linux Distros

Linux Mint Of the two big beginner distros (along with Ubuntu), Mint is the most recommended on /g/, it has no real issues with being a botnet, although it is a bit bloated. If you don't know what to install, install this.

Xubuntu This is the lightweight Ubuntu knockoff
